There they discovered a love for playwriting and directing, co-creating a short one act musical for the TD New Works Festival. As a performer, Niah gravitates towards work that celebrates cultural diversity and offers more representation for minorities. They believe it's important for audiences to see themselves portrayed on stage and for actors to personally connect to the stories they are telling. For these reasons, Niah is passionate about paving a new way forward in the industry. They have recently completed the fourth draft and public reading of their most recent work Anansi and the Hermit Crab; a new play centred on their Caribbean-Canadian ancestry.

GORGÓ
Everyone knows the terrifying tale of the gorgon Medusa, but what if there was more to the story? Gorgó is a retelling of Ovid and Hesoid's myth in the eyes and words of Medusa herself. Moments before her death, the audience is taken through her memories when she was still mortal. A girl fighting against what was expected of her as a woman. From start to finish, Gorgó Medusa weaves together an epic tale of hope, family, betrayal, and grief showing us that the fates are cunning in the way they deliver your greatest wishes. She might have gotten what she always wanted, but at what cost? The piece has completed its second stage of development as of September 2022.
ANANSI AND THE HERMIT CRAB
In the small town of Avebury, Ky steps into his grandmother’s house for the first time in his life. A year has passed since he first met Norma at his estranged father’s memorial. With a lot of convincing on her part, Ky decides to reconnect with her and his ancestral roots on the Caribbean island of Kiidadca. He arrives, ready to explore the town, but instead unknowingly runs into Anansi the Spider, his grandmother’s arch-enemy. The Spider sets his sights on Ky, looking to get revenge for what Norma did to him years ago. With Anansi’s tricks and schemes threatening Ky’s life, Norma is forced to be honest with him about the past, and Ky is forced to confront his grief surrounding his father. Together with the help of the ancestors, they join forces to not only defeat Anansi, but to end the cycle of familial trauma in their bloodline.A public playreading, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and supported by Puente Theatre and Kaleidoscope Theatre, was concluded in September 2024. Four drafts were completed with the guidance of Dramaturge Nicole Brooks and Cultural Consultant Djennie Laguerre over the course of a year. A fifth draft is currently in the works.
